Hi I have a 1953 Chevy truck with the later 235 engine. I had to do the short shaft water pump and I have the four blade fan and I lowered the radiator as far as it will go . I have a 180 thermostat and a 7lb cap and a new radiator. My question is what can cause it to run hot while idling and when it moves it cools down . Is there any ideas on how to fix this or is there any better fans ? There’s not much room between radiator and water pump . Will a pusher fan work ?

While idling, very little air is moving through the radiator - probably because your fan is in the wrong location relative to the radiator.

While driving, air is forced through the radiator regardless of whether you even have a fan installed or not.

Your best bet is to purchase one of pre-68 Dave's water pump adapter which centers the original water pump in front of the radiator where it was on the original engine.

I have a built 302 with a short water pump for clearance with the stock radiator. I replaced the stock 15 “ fan with an 18 “ and installed a shroud. Needless to say , I DO NOT have a cooling problem. The fan at idle pulls air through the radiator so well, it spins the A/C pusher fan without it being on!

Vintage Air sells 6 blade solid steel fans that move a ton of air, they mount with 50% of the blade in front and 50% behind the mounting pad. Most fans are off set, so this may help with your limited space requirements. I have the 17" version which cools my 250 and A/C just fine. I also have a fan not centered on the core in my '37 truck.

A pusher fan will just block air when driving and will only cool the portion it's blowing through if mounted directly to the radiator. Ideally you want to pull air through a core with a shroud big enough for air to pass through the whole core and make the corner turns to exit by way of the fan opening. If the shroud is too close, the corners won't cool due to the restrictions of the tight shroud. The shroud should also be sealed to the core so all air the fan pulls, must come through the core of the radiator.

With out a shroud your next best option is to add more aggressive fan blades or a faster rpm of the water pump pulley.

You could try adding a spacer and moving the fan closer to the core if you have room, or try turning up the rpm at idle.
