51 GMC 250-22 H072. Manual calls for 90w gear oil. I believe it has a GL1 rating. Has anyone used 80-90 or 85-90 and if so , comments? Thanks

The factory actually specifies 90w mineral oil (page 0-5 of the 1948-1952 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual).

Go to Tractor Supply or a similar store and purchase 90weight mineral oil. It's sold as Ford Tractor Transmission Fluid.

For the differential you should use a GL-5 oil. It’s an EP (Extreme Pressure) lubricant that protects the hypoid gears. I use Lucas 80/90. And for the transmission you can use 90 weight mineral oil or a GL-4 oil. Do not use a GL-5 oil in the transmission, it has a high concentration of sulfur/phosphorus additives that can corrode yellow metals like bronze, copper and brass synchronizers.
