Folks, got a 216 stovebolt with 3 spd transmission torque tube rear, gearbox has a crack and leaks, differential also leaks, all original engine/transmission/diff to the ute.

I have a 55 open drive diff in my shed for a conversion to open drive

Does anyone know what’s involved in fitting the Packard 35-37 3 speed up to my engine, been told it was a common conversion back in the day

Steve

I can't imagine how many 35-37 Packard transmissions there are still left in captivity
but it's unlikely it would be a bolt in. Things to consider would be having the clutch gear
the same length and have the same spline as your existing clutch. Would the mounting
for the transmission to the bellhousing be similar. Also what type of output shaft would be
needed. What other fabrication and or machining would be involved. It sounds like a lot
of work and expense for minimal gain.

Simso - Here's a 2005 discussion in the HAMB forum that mentions some folks using the 35-37 Packard 3 speeds behind a couple different engines. A couple mentioned were specifically Stovebolt 6 engines and one detailed some info about the fabrication/use of an adapter plate.

I found it using the web search "1935-37 Packard 3 speed transmission". You might find more on the subject in a search of your own. wink

Hope this might be of some help. smile

I have a 270 GMC with a Packard transmission behind it. It uses an adapter plate. These adapters were sold 70 years ago, but it would be difficult to find one now. But a machine shop could build one.

Thanks for the info on this match up. I can’t imagine that there would be much difference between the’37 and’40 Packard transmissions.
