Does the hose diameter and overall hose length influence the performance of pneumatic tools?

I read somewhere that if you have more than 10' of hose; you need to increase the diameter.

Currently I am using a 20'1/2" diameter hose and the physical distance from the compressor to the tool is less than 10'. The compressor is a 60 gallon Husky (home Depot) compressor with a max output of 125 psi.

I am wondering what is going on, because my DA sander dies out quicker than I thought it should. Is the hose influencing my problem or is the compressor just not strong enough?

If you are using a 1/2" ID hose, which is usually how they are identified (ID) then I think something else is wrong. 3/8" is pretty common in my shop and it powers everything using lengths of 20 feet and longer.

My info says that 100 feet of 3/8" hose will pass 25 CFM at 125 lbs. It looks like the average DA uses between 11 and 13 CFM. If these figures are correct, I don't think it is the hose that is strangling your sander.

The size of the tank doesn't have much effect on the whold picture, How many CFM is it putting out at 90lbs?? D.A.'s are notorious for using a bunch of air, You probably should have over 12 CFM to run it efficiently.

Gazim is correct. Most folks make the mistake of buying a high PSI compressor without taking the capacity (CFM) into account. I'd guess your DA is simply using more air than your compressor can supply at the required pressure.

You really to gauge your hose size by the ID, which is inside diameter.
5/16 ID will flow just fine, and pretty much standard in body shops. 1/4 will work and if thats what you got I wouldnt worry about it because its only 20 ft long.
At 20ft and 1/4 ID you wont notice any PSI and CFM drop to affect a da.

But your compressor is under powered and the da is using more air then what it can produce.
