I read somewhere that if you have more than 10' of hose; you need to increase the diameter.
Currently I am using a 20'1/2" diameter hose and the physical distance from the compressor to the tool is less than 10'. The compressor is a 60 gallon Husky (home Depot) compressor with a max output of 125 psi.
I am wondering what is going on, because my DA sander dies out quicker than I thought it should. Is the hose influencing my problem or is the compressor just not strong enough?

If you are using a 1/2" ID hose, which is usually how they are identified (ID) then I think something else is wrong. 3/8" is pretty common in my shop and it powers everything using lengths of 20 feet and longer.
My info says that 100 feet of 3/8" hose will pass 25 CFM at 125 lbs. It looks like the average DA uses between 11 and 13 CFM. If these figures are correct, I don't think it is the hose that is strangling your sander.

Most folks make the mistake of buying a high PSI compressor without taking the capacity (CFM) into account. I'd guess your DA is simply using more air than your compressor can supply at the required pressure.

| | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 169 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 169 | You really to gauge your hose size by the ID, which is inside diameter. 5/16 ID will flow just fine, and pretty much standard in body shops. 1/4 will work and if thats what you got I wouldnt worry about it because its only 20 ft long. At 20ft and 1/4 ID you wont notice any PSI and CFM drop to affect a da.
But your compressor is under powered and the da is using more air then what it can produce. | | |
