I sold my sm 420 and im putting in a T5, i know the length of input shaft was 6-1/2 inches.but
Im having trouble finding a dimension for the splines from the pilot bushing end. I think my T5 shaft the splines are bottoming out on pilot bushing.
The T5 trans face to end of splines is
6-5/8
The old 420 i believe was 5-5/8

Looking at your pic, you mean 6-3/8" for the T5?

Don't the T5 splines need to be lengthened a little to keep them from bottoming out in the clutch disc, not the pilot bushing? I think the snout that engages the pilot bushing also needs to be shortened some. I've seen that done with a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder- - - - -ugly, but effective!

What Jerry said. I had to shorten the input shaft on my T5, old notes are somewhere but memory is that I made the T5 shaft the same length as the SM420 (cut 1/2 or so off?). And I lengthened the splines with the same cutoff wheel used to adjust the T5 input shaft length. Not pretty but it's been doing the job for 10 years and almost 20k miles.

Good Luck,

RonR

schetk - Here's a very good thread from our own T5 expert Lugnutz discussing The T5 input shaft that also has an excellent solution to your input shaft issue, without having to spend the time and effort to modify your existing shaft.

Here's a different thread by Lugnutz discussing using an adapter plate to correct for the too long input shaft. An alternative to the Jeep input shaft swap.

There are other T5 threads that talk about the modifications (shortening the tip and extending the clutch disc grooves) if you would rather go that direction. Just use the Stovebolt Search link to help you find them. wink
