We still have W10 on our computers. I'm guessing on our PC we'll need to do something about it. The laptop is much older than the PC.

There are apparently a bunch of website talking about all this. What do you all know?

What is the problem if you don't switch? If it anything big deal or just a few annoyances?

Peggy, I haven't had any issues yet. I get a message that some files aren't able to be downloaded. I guess that is my software looking for updates.

The "problem" is that Microsoft will not be issuing any updates for Win10. So if something is found wrong with Win10 Microsoft's answer will be "too bad, upgrade to Win11". Actually, that has been their answer for quite a while.

My computer uses Windows 7. What's all the hubbub about Windows 10?

Windows 8 really sucked. Win 7 was better IMO.

The issue here (as mentioned by Wayne) is that Win 11 is the current version of Windoze and support for Win 10 is ending.

Many older computers cannot be easily upgraded to Win 11. Apparently there are hacks that might work to allow installation of Win 11 on machines that Microsoft says are not supported. Unfortunately, hacks can cause other issues. Anyway, most people probably don't want to spend time researching and implementing hacks.

Supported means that Microsoft provides updates. Without updates, you won't get any security patches or other fixes; your computer still works. Win 7 users will have not had any updates for a long time but it still works for them.

Writing computer viruses is not easy and even without current updates, the operating systems are pretty good at detecting them. So, the bad guys find that it's easier to use social engineering instead. They trick users into giving up their banking info. This is a big issue with artificial intelligence. The tricksters will be able to easily fool more people.

Some people like Win 11. If you have a computer that does not support Win 11, buy a new one.
If you don't care about Win 11, you can stick with Win 10 (or Win 7 like Otto) as long as you want. Presumably the hackers are now looking for Win 11 vulnerabilities.
I use Linux, so I don't care either way! There is a thread in this forum on Linux if you are interested.

My laptop is Win11, my desktop is Win7. While MS no longer "supports" Win7, it still updates on occasion. I have no idea what's updating but it creates a restore point when it does. I'm still able to use FireFox although I did have to transition to a version used on work group computers. I use Windows Defender on the desktop along with Malwarebytes. I'm aware that, someday, Win7 will stop working on the internet but that day isn't here yet. I have noticed that some sites are very slow on my desktop now but normal on my Win11 laptop so I'm assuming it's a scripting difference that the old system is struggling with. I did put a shell on my Win11 laptop to make it look and work (mostly) like Win7. If you're using Win10, you'll likely be OK for some time to come. I read there's a user that filed suit against MS to force them to provide support for Win10 until usage falls below 10%. I have no idea about the success, or lack of, of that suit.
