Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 2,335 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 2,335 | I had put in a 3.55 gear set and had a fellow set the gears for me and while I was doing my bed wood I noticed a drip from the bottom pinion bearing retaining screw. At a closer look I noticed the 3 screws were not screwed in evenly. I was able to screw the bolts to even them out and thought that would solve the leak as the bottom bolt was the one that was not in as far as the other two. I am thinking that I can loosen the lock nut and put some thread tape around it and tighten it back up. I was planing to dump the oil and check the gear gear pattern and the rear bearing clearance to be sure nothing got moved. Any one else experienced any thing like this? Thanks, Kevin

I haven't noticed a leak there since doing that, although I've only put 100 miles on it. No worries about losing the gear pattern, unless your guy didn't get the bearing seated in the first place. That's not likely if two of the pins were tight. I would seal the threads, tighten the screws and move on.

Yes the pinion bearing screw at the bottom was sticking out farther than the other two but everything was tight. I did have another rear axle to look at and to check the depth and they are in place enough to hold everything in place but was unsure about messing with them. Do you remember what sealer you used I was thinking maybe aviation gasket by permatex. I got it at my local parts store. Don't remember the brand, but very similar to Permatex #2. You'll probably want something with a little thickness to it so it squishes into the threads as you tighten the lock nut. I think aviation sealer might be too thin.

It goes on as a thick liquid and cures to form a leakproof seal. HMMMM-- - - - -looks like it's got a new name! www.amazon.com/Permatex-51813-Anaerobic-Gasket-MakerJerry
