I have searched this site and the manuals I have and have not been able to find the torque sequence and specs for the installing the intake and exhaust manifolds.

My engine is a 1954 235ci with hydraulic lifters.

A search of the internet provides conflicting data.

I may very probably overlooked the information, but even a search of the Old Car Manual Project site didn't give me an answer.

I have read on this site to install and torque both the manifolds before tightening the bolts that hold one to the other, but I can't find specifics as to sequence or torque.

My impression is that the bolts with the clamps have different torque specs than the rest.

I assume that all the answers I am looking for are readily available...but I have not been able to find them.

Thanks!

The attached snip from the 1954 Truck Shop Manual (page 6-13 if you want to go there) has the torque specs. And the end clamp bolts do have different torque specs than the center ones. I also checked the 1948-1951 shop manual and the 55.2 shop manual I have and they say the same thing.

I would tighten them both at the same time. There is allot of play on the manifold(s) to head, so if you tighten just those manifolds you stand a good chance that the exhaust to intake joint will be misaligned. Hand tighten all three connection sequentially first, then torque to spec. Honestly, I didn’t have the right tools to be able to torque all of the fasteners so on a few, I took my best guess.

Good points, Phil!

I can see how torquing some of those bolts could run into issues with access!
