Somehow I don't think that the rusty screen door spring wrapped around the carb is correct. It's a Rochester 1 bbl on a 235. What does the return spring look like - is it included with a carb rebuild kit?

I don't know about it being in the rebuild kit, but I've gotten most of my springs from the better stocked hardware stores that carry misc. items. Also some parts/speed store usually have something out on a rack or rounder that would work.

On the oil pan, huh? I would never have guessed that. BTY - Where does the other end hook to at the throttle? The one that the PO 'installed' is hooked to the idle adjusting screw, is wrapped up over the top of the carb body and runs forward to connect to the fuel filter in front of the carb. Thanks.

Beware to get the long 4" spring as too short or too stiff a spring will also cause problems .
The throttle should be quite easy , not stiff at all .
Watch the vertical piece doesn't run the intake manifold anywhere , it's mallable & so easy to dress it as needed .

Just hooking it over the lip of the pan won't work, it will come off. If the hole isn't in the right place (it depends on which linkage you have) you should make a clip that bolts in the outside of the pan flange and bends around the lip with a hole for the spring to hook into. I don't think anyone makes a specific spring for this, but you can get a universal spring at the parts store.

Now look back up at the linkage and there will be a little tab with a hole somewhere that the spring will hook to. If it is missing you may need some new linkage pieces. Try a junkyard or Mothertrucker from the swapmeet on this site.
