My approach is to use something a little softer than the bushing to drive it in. Maybe a piece of oak wood or maybe brass. Any thoughts?

They're made with a bronze layer inside a steel sleeve- - - -not fragile at all. Use a short extension in the socket and a heavy dead blow mallet to do the driving. I've installed dozens of output bushings and torque converter bushings that way when I was rebuilding a lot of automatic transmissions- - - -haven't ruined one yet! Jerry

A few years ago I borrowed a tool (compression tester?) from a local store and was stunned to learn it was free. Just had to leave a credit card number as collateral.
