When mounting a water pump on a 235 are all the holes blind or do some bolts enter the water jackets? Does anyone make a water pump these days that does not leak at the weep hole, or how can prep the new pumps before install. This is my third water pump, the engine only has a couple of hours on it. It's Frustrating at best.
Red I can think of only 2 reasons a water pump will leak at the weep hole (and in ways they're the same thing...sort of): 1. failed shaft seal...this can be caused by a pump which has been sitting on a shelf too long in a really humid area. The shaft rusts and this tears the seal up quickly. 2. a rebuilt pump on which the rebuilder didn't polish and lubricate the seal...or he did and it sat around too long and rusted. Replacing the seal may or may not even be possible. I'll tell you why in a moment. There are 2 shaft seals in the pump...interesting how many people don't understand this. If the rear one fails there's nothing you can do to keep it from leaking out the weep hole. The first image below shows the front seal. You can't see the rear seal and the second image below shows why it isn't easy to fix. You can't normally press that shaft out of the impeller without ruining it. Some people can do it but most people will just tear it up. The mounting and all is the same on these, by the way. Good luck!

Red - To answer your question on the water pump mounting bolt holes enter the water jacket, my experience has been yes they do. You need to use an appropriate sealant on the bolt threads to prevent leakage. I personally like to use Permatex #2 Form-A-Gasket on my water pump and thermostat housing seals and bolt threads.

Red it dawned on me while shaving there is another reason the inner shaft seal will fail to seal and that is that somebody installed it backwards. Not likely but any lip seal has an inner and outer orientation (lip-wise) and installing one incorrectly will let the seal fail to do the job. You also have to remember there will be a little pressure (roughly 7 or so pounds) and that will work against a good seal in any case. Good luck!
