I just rebuilt my 57 235 and switched over to hyd lifters. I confirmed the proper way to adjust the valves in the tech tips forum, but can't locate a tappet wrench anywhere. Any help would be much appreciated.

58erina57,

McMaster-Carr has tappet wrenches. You can find them online and they sell the wrenches in sets or individually. If you're feeling wealthy, Snap-on has the slim-line series. Lots to choose from.

It has been awhile since I have done this, but I thought a conventional end wrench and a stubby screwdriver would get this chore done quite nicely.

atomarc - i have never done it myself but i have seen my dad and brother do it several times just as stuart has stated. they cussed a few times when the wrench or screwdriver bounced off but they eventually got it done.

djed50,

You are correct..it's hot and oily and sometimes the screwdriver goes sailing, but it's the epitome of wrenching on a bolt!

I wonder if 58erina57 was talking about the tappet wrench that was the "all-in-one" contraption with the wrench and palm screwdriver together. I haven't seen one of those since you know who was a kid! grin

I've picked up a couple tappet wrenches one is an old Snap On, uses a scocket. Other is a cheapo "ZimTool" that is a double box end affair with the screwdriver portion on a lever. I still prefer an open end wrench and the stubby. Best tool is to have a third hand. Unlike allot of people I do mine with engine running and HOT.

Another tip is to install a cut down an old valve cover, making a little dam around the edge and you wont have to clean up the oil.

my dad and brother always did theirs with the engine running and the oil splattering. the valve cover would help with the mess. my dad is gone now and my brother is 7 years older than me and was always tinkering on his engine. I wasn't very old at the time - wish now I had paid more attention to what they were doing.
