Been chasing down exhaust pops for a bit, finally discovered slight cupping on a few of my lifters. Before I pulled everything open I noted all of the pushrods still spin at idle. I got some pictures of the lobes and was wanting to get a second opinion on replacing the whole camshaft, as I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment, and because this is a 59 235, the only solid lifters I could find online sell for $40 EACH. So getting a new set and a new camshaft is out of the question for the time being, though I could perhaps afford to replace a few of them if the camshaft itself could still be reused.

I wouldn't run it. Lifters are really bad.

Hard to believe the lifters and pushrods could even rotate with the condition of the lifters, I would expect the camshaft to be damaged beyond use.

I recently saw (don't remember where, but most likely here) someone advertising resurfacing lifters for what I thought was a very reasonable price ($4 each?).

'57 GMC 102, Original 347 V8, HydraMatic, 3.08 rear gear, added A/C, disk front brakes, HEI, AFB carb, '98 Honda Black Currant paint. T-boned and totaled 10/12
'52 GMC 152 Stake Bed, Original 228, SM420, added A/C, HEI, disk front brakes, '67 Chev 3.55 rear gear. Gets used as a real truck.

Well dang that is reasonable. Jim Carter shows they have the camshaft for about $230. If I can just get my lifters resurfaced then that wouldn't be too much to save up for. Or would getting it reground possibly be cheaper?

That cam is probably worn beyond the point it can be reground. There's only so much material left to reshape the lobes, and once the nose of the lobe is gone, it's unlikely that enough material could be ground off the base circle to regain the proper timing and lift. Send me a private message- - - -I might have a work-around for you that needs to be discussed in a one-on-one conversation. Click on my username and select the PM option from the drop-down menu.

Same with lifter resurfacing, the lifter would be much shorter by the time you get it back to the correct shape. Also the hardened portion is likely long gone, the hardened portion is just a thin layer. Would the valve train have enough adjustment to compensate for the shorter cam and lifter?

Here's a good option on the cam- - - - -new, not reground.
