I am curious about the cigarette lighters ,are there 6 volt and 12 volt or are they the same .I would like to put one in my truck to power or charge phones ect. Has anyone installed and used one for powering phone chargers?
The socket is the same. The heating element in the actual cigarette lighter is different between 6v and 12 volt.
I use mine to charge phones, ear pods and previously an old Garmin GPS unit. I fused the lighter socket at 5 amps to support these smaller loads and then ripped the heating element out of the lighter to insure someone wouldn't push it in which would cause the small fuse to blow.

I added a 12 volt combo unit to my '38. It's a power outlet and a usb dual charger with 3.0 charging.
I have used it to power a bluetooth speaker when I do Little Blue Truck days.
I also added a switch to turn the unit off when the truck is parked and not in use to prevent battery drain.

The generic socket at oreilly auto parts fit very well in my 1950 looks virtually identical to the original, the chrome ring maybe slightly different width maybe but you can’t tell.
The original 6v lighter can short this new socket out however I did have to modify it slightly But it likely would be fine as is for all modern things that plug into it with a plastic body. -s
