I don't know where I got the 3 pictures attached. If any of you have additional information about where this switch may be found please post it here. I saved the pictures in October of 2023.

The first two have Mother.Trucker's tag on them. Maybe he knows where it might be available.

Novak's will modify your SM-420 top cover by drilling and tapping a hole into the tunnel that the reverse shifter shaft slides in and then installing a switch in the hole. Last I checked they would do it for $120 if you supply the tranny top cover. The switch has a ball shaped "button" that the shifter shaft presses on when the rod is in the "reverse" position. I just don't want to tear mine apart.

Can one make a copy of that type assembly by adding a switch-holding leg to the shift lever cap (or a spare piece), installing a switch in that leg, and fabbing the arm that activates it?

Yes, as I said. I made a drawing of how to clone it. If there are no originals available it my satisfy or spark improvement. Geared toward a DIY person with some moderate skill.

"That is my picture & I do have the switch assembly pictured.... but, I only sell the switch with the original 1941-1954 lamp assembly that clamps on to the rear bumper bracket & the whole set up is not cheap."
I decided to pass because my truck is a flatbed, with no back bumper to mount the backup lamp assembly on. I'll leave it for someone who is a real "originality" guy.

Here is a picture of a SM420 with Novak's backup switch (it is red) installed in the cover.

Per Bill Hanlon's comments above, I did this a few years ago to my SM420 and it still working like a champ.
You can see the switch towards the front of the gearbox with a couple wires attached to it

Craig, where did those backup lights come from? They look just like the ones on a 1977 Honda CVCC I used to have.

No idea where they came from. All I remember is the challenge of find something that would fit on that lower cross member which wouldn't get crunched when I lowered the gate.

Below is my backup light solution. So far, just activated by a toggle switch in the cab. Both LED light assemblies point down at 5 degrees or so.

Aha! Here's my old backup light, guiding me down the driveway or up towards the garage as well as helping me look for critters in the bushes. Very adjustable
