It’s been a while since I’ve been on here, but just started on a 57 gmc 100, and am trying to figure out what these were for

There's a regular tube type shock on it.

There’s no lines or anything, it just sits above the kingpin, my first thought was liquid tire chain, but I thought that wasn’t until the 60s and only for a couple years

I wonder if they're some sort of dampers.

Those are called "road shock dampers" (if I remember correctly). I think they were standard on GMC Suburbans and available as a bolt-on for other small trucks. Somewhere I have a GMC document on them, but I've been looking for 20+ minutes and no luck so far.

No hydraulics in them, just springs and a weight.

I just looked them up. A guy on another forum says they work really well on rough roads. Offered on GMC '55.2 - '59.

It's a Shock Dampener assembly. Only available on GMC's of that era. I believe they have some
information on the GMC site.

After '59 apparently there were no more gravel roads and no more wash boards over which GMCs operated. If it was a good idea that worked I wonder why GMC dropped it.

Roads were improving rapidly. Interstate Hwy system was 3 years into construction. Hydraulic shocks were much improved.

Maybe they felt it was superfluous.

Some models of the first gen Camaros had something similar over the rear wheels.
