| | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 146 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 146 | I knew a guy named Rob, he owned a bodyshop, Celtic Coachworks, oncehe had an accident with a cutoff wheel, the small 3 inch cutting disk exploded, the shatters went thru the full face lexan shield and he lost an eye. It was pretty tragic, because we all can understand that using a face shield or gogles can make us safe.The lesson was that although losing an eye he was still better alive because if it were not for the shiled, the doctors told him that the shapnel would have reached his brain. After that, I retired my cut off wheel, having it as an unsafe tool, even with the adequated protective equipment.

My brother was running a large chop saw used to cut structural steel tubing and bar stock. It had a 20 inch abrasive blade and a long handle so you would stand about 4 feet from the blade when it was cutting. Even though it was water cooled it still sent a huge shower of sparks everywhere.
One day the blade shattered and a piece caught him inside the thigh right below the groin. His blood was pumping out of him like a water spigot. Good thing the Seattle Fire Dept was right next door and the hospital only a few minutes away. From that point forward, air cylinders were used for all material clamping and the chop saw was raised and lowered with air cylinders as well. No one can stand in the path of the blade. | | |
