I have a whine/roar that sounds like it's coming from the rear. I had the rear checked at a local garage and they found nothing wrong. Matter of fact they found the rear gears and bears look like new. Even showed me pictures. Little to no wear and everything clean. I don't believe they removed any of the gears. Also said wheel bearings were like new. Noise is still there. Just a rear end lube change for only $243. So, any suggestions on where I can look for the noise. I suspect there is maybe some clearance tolerance that may be out that they would not have been able to "see" . BTW it occurs only at lower speeds. Get up to higher speeds and it stops. Only had the truck since early summer. It had a frame off and not used much since done. They also did not finish the job (restoration) .Thanks

Could it be tire noise?

What type of transmission in the truck? I don't think it's the rear end making noise if it goes away at higher speeds.

OTTO, I don't believe it's tire noise. They are relative new radials.

BUCKSHOT, the transmission is stock three on the tree but the rear end is a 3.07 78-79 C10

Swap tires front to back and see if there's a change. Tire/road noise is a weird thing.

Jack up the rear end and put it in gear and see if the noise is present. If it is you can inspect it a little more closely.

Does the sound change or go away when you step on the brakes? Maybe brake shoe rubbing?

I’ve had that happen. Brake drum was in bad shape. That was more of a grinding noise than a whine, however.

Did the shop check the tooth pattern on the ring gear & pinion. Sounds like someone replaced all those parts but didn't get the contact pattern correct.

George I don't know. I don't have a lot of confidence in what they did. I told them what I wanted fixed and they basically said " of look it's all new" and closed it up.
