I'm putting in a right side visor and there is a dimple in the right hand corner. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is there to mark where the 1" hole needs to be drilled for the visor. Is that correct? ('56 3100)

It has the detailed instruction for the ‘57 Right Side visor, which should be same for your 1956.

Here is another reference pic from the 1955-59 FAM which references the “dimple” you mentioned.

Thanks Dan. The second diagram from the 55-59 FAM appears to say i can use the visor mount as a fixture to set the drilling points for the three screws rather than a template used in the first set of drawings. Actually that was my plan. I just needed confirmation that the dimple was the starting point.
Actually I don't need an inch and a half hole either, a one inch hole (which i have a drill the right size) will work fine for the visor mount I have.

Mickey, Glad the info proved helpful. I agree that the 1-1/2" hole sounds like overkill. How about some pics of your install to show other folks in the future how it's done?

Done. I drilled a 1 3/8" hole on the spot of the dimple. Held the mount in place and marked the three hole. Drilled the holes and mounted the visor. The hardest part was getting the mount rod down into the visor.
The tool below is used to drill the large hole. They come in a variety of sizes.
