luck into a 1940 chevy 2 ton made in canada
it is about 90% complete and original
problem is it has to many levers in the cab
i have a brake lever/ i have a 4 speed shifter/
i have a two speed axle lever so far so good
now the problem? above the driver seat on my left side i have a lever a part of the body looks orginal just sitting there hook up to nothing just goes forward and backwards what is it for
next: on the floor behind the driver feet in front of the seat on the driver side again is another lever going throught the floor it is not hook up to anything just a lever going forward and backwards i think it is suppose to be for a PTO just not sure i am pulling out may levers opps my hair trying to figure this out can anyone help

probably used to be a dump truck. one lever for p.t.o. and the other for the bed control.

didja get under the truck to see if it's got a p.t.o. on the trans, or are ya still in the cab facinated by working the levers?

the one above is prolly for the old semaphore style mechanical turn signal, most common on bigger trucks, the one underfoot would be the PTO engage lever, would be heading to the trans side cover - useta be a grain truck?

ref the PTO you could be right got under the truck the other end was not hook up to anything but if it was for PTO now i know what i will look for thanks for that point
the number 2???? if it was for a old semapore style mechanical turn signal can you help me some more on this red58 like to keep this girl orginal

If it was a dump truck before the lever to the left of the driver could also have been for the tailgate. If you post some pictures I am sure you will get all your questions answered.

sounds like you found a winner so congrats!

i doubt the tailgate explaination as most dump tailgates in that era were a lever mounted at the front of the dump bed.

here's a sure thing. as long as these old trucks have been around in one form or another, the possibilities for it's use are endless. not far from here is a 54 chevy 1 ton that has the orig. trans. hooked up to a p.t.o., which operates a dump flatbed, and a homemade log splitter. not many would have guessed what all those levers are on that truck either. at any rate, welcome, and i for one certainly hope you enjoy your new old truck. be sure to make yourself comfortable, and stay awhile.

Both my 56 and 57 dumps have the tailgate lever in the cab by the left kick panel they are however fully mechanical linkage all the way to the tailgate. I have seen the ones that you are talking about I don't like them, they are hard to spread with you have to put a rope on the lever so you can trip the gate when the box is in the air.

i have seen what you are talking about, and agree it is better than the older style, but that's the point, older style. i have never seen early 50's and late 40's dump beds with inside linkage.

inside are definitely easier to control (especially when it's raining, huh)
