On the speedometer cable itself at one end of it there is a metal band crimped around the cable that's about an inch or so from the end. The other end has nothing. Does that band go in on the transmission end or the odometer end ?

Don't know about '56 speedo cables, but mine '(51) has different ends (thread size) and can't be installed backwards.

I'm referring to the inner cable itself, not the outer shield. The inner one can go in at either end of the shield. That's the one I want to be sure of. BTW the '56 is the same as the 51. Different end on the outer shield.

I'm remembering from back in the early 60's when I was an early teenager, but I think you could pull the cable completely out through the top (speedometer) end.

'57 GMC 102, Original 347 V8, HydraMatic, 3.08 rear gear, added A/C, disk front brakes, HEI, AFB carb, '98 Honda Black Currant paint. T-boned and totaled 10/12
'52 GMC 152 Stake Bed, Original 228, SM420, added A/C, HEI, disk front brakes, '67 Chev 3.55 rear gear. Gets used as a real truck.

Yup, if the needle started bouncing you could pull the cable out, lubricate it and slid it back in᠁ or replace it if damaged.

Well I just put a new cable in and had the cable out to lube it so I wanted to make sure I put it in right. Does the metal collar go at the odometer end or at the transmission end. No answer yet. ohwell

The collar goes at the speedo end on all of the Chevy ones I have touched (including on my 58), but I don't know if yours is the same or not.

I believe it should be the same between a 56 and a 58.

Thanks, I put it in that way. I ran across a couple site with some good formulas and information on sorting out problems with gears and ratios. Please just delete if I shouldn't post links.
