Hello,
I mentioned this awhile ago on the page and now I have had time to go hunting for a screen printer. I am looking at making replacement VIN plates for 2 ton Chevys. You can see a sample of what the plate will look like at:

http://photoshare.shaw.ca/view/5655793371-1187199853-96173/

I don't know how many people would be interested in buying one, I don't have a cost from the printer, but I would sell them at cost plus postage. My VIN plate is totally worn off. All you can see is the stamped number, and just a little of the black printing. How many of you would be interested? The main cost is set up charges and materials, it wouldn't take much for print time. I was thinking of ordering about 50, if I can afford it.

Hi super55
I am in the UK and have a 2ton COE 1948, My plate is in a similar state of wear as yours, I would be very interested in having a new plate for my restoration.
Let me know the cost and the shipping
regards
Kelvin

I will. I have to hear back from the printer. I'll keep everyone posted. If it's too high, I may do it myself. I have screen printed before, but not enamel on aluminum.

I just got a reply from the printer and I hit a dead end. Looks like I will have to try to do it myself. If that's the way it is, they will be really cheap to make. Now all I have to do is get someone to shear up some plate. I have done screen printing before.

They are aluminum, but how thick?
I can shear them, and may even have the material.
Find out the thickness and I'll look, or see if I can find some locally.

Grigg,
I sent you an email that I had sent the printer with the specs.
Paul

Thanks Paul, I got the email.
A friend or mine is a screen printer here in town, I could ask about it. Why could the printer you contacted not do it, or was it the price?

Gentlemen;

The Printer may be concerned with 'civil liability here in the USA, or the possible criminal charges. eek

What you (S-55) propose is a great idea and well intentioned I'm sure. cool

However; the possibility of abuse is there and I would get legal advice before you proceed further.

Some one was making these for early (37-40) passenger cars a while back and was asked to "cease & desist" as I recall.

Good luck. smile

John H. Meredith, I understand your concern, but I was assuming it was okay since several of the well known after market suppliers have them for sale for the 1/2 tons, but not the 2 tons. I still have my plate, but it is unreadable except for the stamped serial number. I actually bought one of the after market half ton plates to see how it looked. I don't plan on putting them out to the general market just guys on this page too.

Grigg, I didn't get a reason from the printer, I am thinking they just weren't interested or not used to doing metal. I went to a custom car graphics shop and it would be too pricy by a long run. We are talking hundreds of dollars.

You might have to enter into a licensing agreement with GM to do this. Check with their corporate people and get all that straight before you start making plates.
