Been a memeber for a while, but haven't stopped by in a long time. I like the new "Big Bolts" forum. Just wondering if there are any '60 to '72 (or newer) C50 to C90 owners out there.

Or GMC 4000 to 9500 owners as well?

I don't own one myself, but would you believe there's two Chevy Long Nose C90's running around my town. One's a Tandem dump, & the other a Tandem Tractor.

Appreciate all the replies.

3B, What kind do you have?

spanky, Those C-90 Long Nose trucks are definitely favorites of mine. Do you know if they are running 8V-71 Detroit's in them?

I'm not sure of the power plants, I believe they are Detroits though. One's owned by J.E. Long Grading, & the other by Bud Capps Grading, both here in Burlington.

I also used to drive a '62 GMC 6500. That truck is equal to a C-80, as the 7500 was a "B" style cab in those years.

What are the specs on your truck? (Engine, trans, GVW, brakes, etc).

It has a 671 Detroit in it with the 5 & 2 trans, Air brakes, None in the front, Twin screw,
Henderson suspension, Rockwell rear ends.
Power Steering.
I bought it in Mancelona Michigan & drove it to central MN.
It also has a wet kit on it.
It's a good truck, But need to get the tack to work, The drive part on the front of the motor is broke, The key mec is the problem & the cover has to be taken off & the broken key removed.
I cant get at it other wise.
Hard to shift with out the tack.
Some of these had a clutch brake, This one dont.
I was thinking of stretching the fraim & puting a 20' box & hoist on it.
Or just get a bellie dump.
It's a reel screemer, You sure can hear it comin down the road like a mile away.

Repair, Once you get used to it, you will be able to shift by ear and not need the tach. I had a tach in mine and hardly ever looked at it. One thing tho, altho many don't drive this way no more, I always use the clutch and I always double clutch. Mine had a 10 Speed Road Ranger tho. A 5 Speed is actually easier to drive. A 2 Speed Rear needs some getting used to if you split shift all the gears. A 6-71, like all Detroits are high revers, but I don't like to over rev them, even tho they have governors.

I also have a 84 GMC 7000 With a 8.2 Detroit in it, It runs great & it drives down the road like a pick up truck.
There is a 68 N 70 Ford with a 471 Detroit, Now that is a tank, Rides & drives like you were on 2 elephants & they dint like each other.
I'm kind of looking for older trucks for parts, Also need boxes & hoists to fix & make some of These into grain trucks.

When you say a 10 speed road ranger do you mean you shift 5 gears & flip the switch & start over
for the other 5.
Thats the way this one is, There is no 2 speed rear ends.
Its all on the shift lever.

Mine shifts better is you double clutch & dont rev it up to far.
The govener on this truck must not be working.
I had it up to 65 MPH 1 time - nothing behind just the tractor.
Most of the grain trucks have a 2 speed rear end & these work reel good with a 4 or 5 speed trans.
I know a fellow that has a GMC with a 8.2 Detroit with a 16 speed road ranger in it.
Start in low range shift 5 times go to medium 5 more times than to high range & 5 more.
Nice truck but you dont ever get your hand off the shift knob, He wants to sell it to me.

Sounds like my kind of truck as I love to shift.

65 MPH sounds about right in your truck. My truck would top out at 62.

You may want to have a mechanic, who knows the old Detroit's, to check out the governor to make sure it is adjusted right.

One thing about a Road Ranger tho, is that it shifts very differnet than a regular 4 Speed or 5 Speed trans. You actually have to shift it pretty fast. Very unlike many of the new trucks today that can practically have a lunch break between shifts. Especially true with a high revving Detroit. Once taking off in first gear, you really need to keep up a fast rythem of high revving and fast shifting. Just slightly hesitating in nuetral while double clutching. Once you have the rythem you won't even need the tach as mentined earlier. The old Detroit's also produce their power more at the higher RPMs.

Now downshifting is a whole differnt story and a Road Ranger is also different there too.

Spoke with Bud Capps, of Bud Capps Grading, yesterday, about his longnose C90 tandem tractor. He says it's powered by a 318 Detroit. He also said he had purchased his C90, from the same place, the other Company here in town, had purchased theirs.

For those out there that would like to hear what a 318 Detroit (8V-71) sounds like click onto here: http://www.telusplanet.net/public/ryq/

It is actually a recording of a 12V-71 but a 318 sounds a lot like it.

Scroll down to Audio Clips and the 3rd one down is a 12V-71 "Warming Up".

There are other Detroits on there, but no 8V-71 as of yet. The owner of the site adds new ones now and then.

With some small mufflers a 318 can sound sweet.

Hi Bill, Saw your post. I've got a '64 Chevrolet C-60 2 ton, all original. It's for sale, and it is posted here on the Stovebolt. I've got to many projects, and not enough time. I've got a '50 Chevy 5 window, '66 Suburban, and a '66 1/2 ton custom-big back glass. So they all keep my time at bay!!! Check it out, pictures included! If you know of anyone that's looking for Big Bolt send them my way.
Talk to you later,
Warren

Their are two 318 Detroit’s the 318 HP 8V-71 and the 318 CID 6V-53 I am guessing that the C-90 came with a 6V-53. The 8V-71 is a good size chunk of iron and fit very tightly in the biggest of class-8 trucks. If it did come with an 8V-71 an 8V-92 Silver would be an easy swap and it was 425 HP.

Actually in a C-90, the most popular engine was the 6-71, second most popular the 8V-71. The 6V-53 was mostly in C-70's.

It's true about the 318 meaning CID on a 6V-53. But for some reason, the truckers, way back when, started nick-naming the 8V-71 a "318" as it is the horse power of one as you have mentioned.

Warren,

I saw pictures of your truck a few days ago. It is one fine example of an original truck in beautiful conditon.

I never saw an original truck of that size with a tag axel. Do you know if it was dealer installed, independant shop installed or factory installed?

Just saw the picture of your truck. It looks like you've got about a 4-6 Yard Dump bed on there. Good size bed for that size truck.

By the way, I used to own a '72 HD Sportster.

Bill,

I just replied to your post over at the other forum. Nice '67 C-30 that you picked up.

I checked out the pictures of your C-60. It looks like you have a good 'ol 292 in there.

Also noted that you have something rare in that truck. You have a 2-Ton with a large back glass.

I never saw one before.

Looks like a good heavy duty dump bed on that truck.

Beautiful looking truck John. By the picture, it looks like it is either a '64 or a '65.

I used to drive a '62 GMC 6500. There are details of that truck in my post to Spanky in this forum, Labeled: Attn. Spanky

I have a 65 C50 wrecker with a 292 in it. Got it running after 15 years sitting under a tree. It has brake issues now. Loved it when I first cranked it over and it started. You could have called me the chesire cat . Smiling from ear to ear. I got the bug.

The 292 is one good engine. Had a 292 in my '64 C-30 and it sure would pull. I have a '68 292 from a school bus, just waiting to go into one of my trucks.

I picked up a 1977 tilt cab GMC 6500 with a 12 ft dump and a 427 a few days ago.

It is in pretty good shape and shouldn't take much to make it road worthy.

I like the big trucks but my daily driver is a 1971 lwb C-10 with a 350 and a compound 4 speed.

Sounds like a good truck. Send us some pictures if you can. What kind of trans does it have?

My daily driver is a '72 C-10 LWB. I like that 4-Speed, mine is only a 3-Speed on the column.
