I like the new "Big Bolts" forum. Just wondering if there are any '60 to '72 (or newer) C50 to C90 owners out there.
Or GMC 4000 to 9500 owners as well?

3B, What kind do you have?
spanky, Those C-90 Long Nose trucks are definitely favorites of mine. Do you know if they are running 8V-71 Detroit's in them?

Power Steering. I bought it in Mancelona Michigan & drove it to central MN. It also has a wet kit on it. It's a good truck, But need to get the tack to work, The drive part on the front of the motor is broke, The key mec is the problem & the cover has to be taken off & the broken key removed. I cant get at it other wise. Hard to shift with out the tack. Some of these had a clutch brake, This one dont. I was thinking of stretching the fraim & puting a 20' box & hoist on it. Or just get a bellie dump. It's a reel screemer, You sure can hear it comin down the road like a mile away. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 | Repair, Once you get used to it, you will be able to shift by ear and not need the tach. I had a tach in mine and hardly ever looked at it. One thing tho, altho many don't drive this way no more, I always use the clutch and I always double clutch. Mine had a 10 Speed Road Ranger tho. A 5 Speed is actually easier to drive. A 2 Speed Rear needs some getting used to if you split shift all the gears. A 6-71, like all Detroits are high revers, but I don't like to over rev them, even tho they have governors.

There is a 68 N 70 Ford with a 471 Detroit, Now that is a tank, Rides & drives like you were on 2 elephants & they dint like each other. I'm kind of looking for older trucks for parts, Also need boxes & hoists to fix & make some of These into grain trucks. | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 75 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 75 | Bill When you say a 10 speed road ranger do you mean you shift 5 gears & flip the switch & start over for the other 5. Thats the way this one is, There is no 2 speed rear ends. Its all on the shift lever. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 | Repair,

| | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 75 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 75 | Bill Mine shifts better is you double clutch & dont rev it up to far. The govener on this truck must not be working. I had it up to 65 MPH 1 time - nothing behind just the tractor. Most of the grain trucks have a 2 speed rear end & these work reel good with a 4 or 5 speed trans. I know a fellow that has a GMC with a 8.2 Detroit with a 16 speed road ranger in it. Start in low range shift 5 times go to medium 5 more times than to high range & 5 more. Nice truck but you dont ever get your hand off the shift knob, He wants to sell it to me. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 | Sounds like my kind of truck as I love to shift.
65 MPH sounds about right in your truck. My truck would top out at 62.
You may want to have a mechanic, who knows the old Detroit's, to check out the governor to make sure it is adjusted right.
One thing about a Road Ranger tho, is that it shifts very differnet than a regular 4 Speed or 5 Speed trans. You actually have to shift it pretty fast. Very unlike many of the new trucks today that can practically have a lunch break between shifts. Especially true with a high revving Detroit. Once taking off in first gear, you really need to keep up a fast rythem of high revving and fast shifting. Just slightly hesitating in nuetral while double clutching. Once you have the rythem you won't even need the tach as mentined earlier. The old Detroit's also produce their power more at the higher RPMs.
Now downshifting is a whole differnt story and a Road Ranger is also different there too.

For those out there that would like to hear what a 318 Detroit (8V-71) sounds like click onto here: http://www.telusplanet.net/public/ryq/ It is actually a recording of a 12V-71 but a 318 sounds a lot like it. Scroll down to Audio Clips and the 3rd one down is a 12V-71 "Warming Up". There are other Detroits on there, but no 8V-71 as of yet. The owner of the site adds new ones now and then. With some small mufflers a 318 can sound sweet.

The 8V-71 is a good size chunk of iron and fit very tightly in the biggest of class-8 trucks. If it did come with an 8V-71 an 8V-92 Silver would be an easy swap and it was 425 HP. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 | Actually in a C-90, the most popular engine was the 6-71, second most popular the 8V-71. The 6V-53 was mostly in C-70's.
It's true about the 318 meaning CID on a 6V-53. But for some reason, the truckers, way back when, started nick-naming the 8V-71 a "318" as it is the horse power of one as you have mentioned.

I just replied to your post over at the other forum. Nice '67 C-30 that you picked up.
I checked out the pictures of your C-60. It looks like you have a good 'ol 292 in there.
Also noted that you have something rare in that truck. You have a 2-Ton with a large back glass.
I never saw one before.
Looks like a good heavy duty dump bed on that truck.
