I have a 53 Chevy truck with a 235
I just went through the engine block cleaning and unclogging the block drain.
I have a new radiator with an electric fan that will be going in soon.
I want to install a toggle switch to bypass the temperature sensor to turn on as needed I was told I need to install a diode between the fan and the temp sensor so not to send a reverse current to the sensor or relay.
Thanks

I used these on my truck. Good for a third brake light also. Cheaper on Amazon too.

Here's the link without all the junk. I learned here that everything from the ? on is not necessary.

No diode needed. e.g.

I concur this is how mine is wired you are really just creating the ground to trigger a manual start. No different than the thermal switch does. and it cares less if its got a connection on either side.

the previous post link shows it well done.

1. Don't know if you are talking about the temp sensor/sender on motor for gauge (which is mechanical) or the fan thermostat switch?
2. "I was told I need to install a diode" by whom?
3. Wire it per the instructions from fan company. I don't see any diagrams showing a diode. If diode fails, you won't know it.
4. If you need a fan on a 235 with a new radiator, you got problems.
5. You don't mention a relay?.....or fuses. These are your safety items.
6. Let the fan turn itself on....

If you choose to install a bypass switch to override the temp sensor, be sure to power it from a source such as the "accessory" terminal on the ignition switch. That way it's sure to shut off when the engine stops, even if you forget to switch off. I've seen batteries run down by leaving accessories turned on with an override switch when the driver leaves the override on accidentally.
