I just joined the site and I first posted this in another area before I saw this section for big trucks.

Anyways, I need to haul a '53 or close to that year 6500 cab and chassis. I just want to know if it is within the weight I can haul on my car hauler. Some ones title should list "unladen weight"? (I don't have the title on this one)

Thanks.

Cab, & chassis weight of a truck that size will be around 4800-5200lbs.

I moved your post in the General Truck section to here.

I have hauled many of the 6000 series trucks easily with an F-250 PSD and a gooseneck trailer with brakes. The only trouble I had was with one with no engine and tranny and a heavy steel bed. It was too heavy in the rear and I had to slow down. With no bed you should have no trouble. (Assuming your trailer has brakes.)

Thanks guys.
Cletis: I deleted the other one now.

I've got a '93 (pre power stroke) ford 250 with a tilt car/equipment trailer with dual 5,200s w/brakes. It's bumper pull (well, receiver hitch, I ain't dumb enough to acrually use the bumper) I use a 1,000 weight distributing hitch and I've hauled a small dozer and a farm trakter that weighed about 8,000 before, so this should be fine, I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks again guys.

I'm just wondering if any one has hauled one with a car dolly that the front wheeles sit on? probably too wide to fit on a car dolly.

I don't know about a car dolly, would probably be about the limit weight and safety wise.

I have towed one with a tow bar with all 4 wheels on the ground.

It worked quite well for the about 3,000 mile trip from WA to NY. However, I would not want to tow a truck that weighed more than my towing (lead) truck. Brakes and weight over the rear wheels of the towing truck are very important things to consider.

My only thinking is that I tow my 26' boat with twin small blocks that weighs 6,000 lbs with my k2500 chevy pickup no problem. The trailer is a duel axel and has no brakes. You do have to plan your stops but it's not bad. I'm going to move my C50 to Maine about a 2.5 hr trip in a vehicle made in the last 20 years. to do some work at my camp there. I don't really trust it that far, and it would be a hell ride on the highway.

If it runs and drives and stops, and has had no major problems in the past year or so driving locally then drive it to Maine.

I had driven my 52 1 ton around town and never out of the county for a few years before I took a trip around the country in it, 8,000 miles with only a broken fan and a bad generator bearing.
You really don't know till you try do you?
If it works around town chances are it will be fine on a trip.

Ya, you're probably right. 8,000 miles! you are a mad man Grigg. I guess I should give it a try.I got to get it running smoother, having a carb problem I believe right now. Idles rough can't find a vacume leak and Ignition aready gone through. Just idles poorly/lean?

Hi, My 48 6400 w/dump grain bed weighed in @9000#. The trailer tips the scales @just shy of 2000#. I towed this combo in 2004 from north central Kansas to Salt Lake with 3/4t Chevy 2wd, 350eng,4sp manual. No problems except miserable fuel economy and 25mph on some of the expressway hills. Dual 7000# axels w/brakes on receiver hitch trailer. Kept load over axels and it was fine. Weights are from truck scales at local dump.

Hey rust master, I can speak from experience concerning the tow dolly. Don't do it! Going straight would be ok, but wait until you get to the first sharp turn. The towed truck and dolly will not try to go straight, it will go straight! Lesson: with a car dolly, the tow vehicle should always out weigh the towed truck. Unless of course you enjoy replacing little old ladies white picket fences. Sorry, I digress.
