Looking for some advice from those who have rebuilt an SM420 Transmission. The rebuild guide says to "press" the 3rd gear bushing ( made of brass alloy ) onto the shaft. The new bushing did not require much of a "press" to install it onto the shaft and press on until it bottoms out on the second speed thrust washer. I was able to force it onto the shaft with my fingers. I'm thinking something is wrong. Either the new mainshaft is undersized or the bushing ID is oversized. Any thoughts on this ?

I found the same thing. No press needed - just push it on with fingers.

Gord&Fran, Well that's good news to hear! I suppose I'll just move on then. Thanks!

Use a little green Loctite "stud and bearing mount" if the loose fit concerns you. Just be sure to degrease both parts well with brake or carb cleaner first so the lock goop gets a good bite. 500 degrees F. with a Propane torch breaks the bond if you ever need to disassemble things again.
