Is there a recommended nut & bolt vendor(s) that stocks the original-style panhead "stovebolt" machine screws used on our Stovebolt Chevy 6s?

See pic of an original 235 valve cover screw and spreader on my 55 3100 First Series.

Mr G has everything you can think of. His website also has actual size pictures to compare

Mr. G's stocks two possibilities on p. 125 of its catalog. Item FA 4259 is stainless steel and correct 3/4" length. Item FA 3443 is zinc plated steel, 1" length and would probably need to be trimmed to 3/4" length.

FA 4259 H $ 0.45
1/4-20x3/4 Pan,
Slotted 18-8, S.S.

FA 3443 A $ 0.45
1/4-20x1 Pan
Slotted, Zinc

Looks like there is no minimum order, so won't have to buy a box of 50 to replace four valve cover screws.

An excellent resource.

Thanks Otto

You're welcome. I love Mr. G's.

I needed some oddball clips for my Cadillac or Toronado (I forget which) that I couldn't find anywhere else and he had exactly what I needed .

Finding the slotted panhead screws at a local hardware or farm store is harder than one might think.

However, I did notice the other day that Rural King had 1/4-20 “combination” slot/Phillips panhead screws in a 3/4 length. There were bulk packs in regular steel/zinc. Also had stainless if you wanted to spend a bit more and buy two screws at a time.

VEW,

Thanks for checking your stuff!

Yes, 1/4”-20 machine screw, 3/4” length.

But looking for a slotted panhead with flatter head profile like the photo in my original post, and attached again here.

Those are round head screws, not pan head screws (VEW's picture).

Pan heads are pretty easy to come by at a well stocked hardware store, but nowadays, they're usually phillips drive. Example
Otto's link to MrG's site can get you the right stuff. (Thanks for that Otto thumbs_up)

If you're smart enough to take it apart, you darn well better be smart enough to put it back together.
