Looking for a cable replacement for the end gate. Any info on where to buy one would be great or if anyone has made one what materials used would also work. It's on a 1957 Chevy suburban.
Are you looking for the cable itself, or the reel assembly??? I tried to do a little research and found that the Chevy Parts books list the "cable" that is used for 1947-59 Suburbans as GM# 3811539. The cable in the parts book has a listed length of 49-13/64". Chevy used a similar cable for the Cameo truck tailgates and Station Wagon and Nomad Models, but those lengths are shorter than the listed Suburban cable.

Most hardware stores will have steel cable in various diameters as well as thimbles that can be crimped on to form a loop end or a stopper. I usually use the cutter portion of my vice grip pliers to crimp them on. A couple bites (not all the way through of course) usually does the trick nicely. Just a suggestion if you can't find an original replacement. Just found this site which looks to have about anything you'd need to build one.
