The latest from Jon G -- The Ernest Hemingway of engine Tech Tips!! Jon shows how to make some spreaders to seal your valve cover and stop those annoying leaks!

The Tech Tip is posted HERE

Very nice!

Jon’s solution is likely more effective and better looking than my theorized solution. On my “when I get around to it” list is to grind some width out of the widely available SBC valve cover spreaders. I think they could be made to fit.

This is the kind of thing I’m talking about:

What little oil seeps from my valve cover is it noticeable enough given the seeps from other areas. Based on advice given here, I have done “part” of the tech tip. The tinsmith work to flatten the bolt holes and my VC is glued to the head with Permatex super 300.

Great idea, but I'm curious as to why these are made from aluminum rather than steel?

Here's enough spreader bars for two engines- - - - -might need a little tweaking with a bench grinder to make them fit a stovebolt six- - - - -

Thanks! I had aluminum handy and it cuts okay with a saber saw. Besides aluminum that thick will provide enough "springiness" and I wanted pressure extending all the way down the sides and to the back and front corners. This was done a while ago and leaks haven't been a problem since.

I see. Thank you for the tip. I will definitely fabricate some for my new engine. Hate to have a newly painted engine and then have oil leaking on it
