Were transmissions, the 4 speed SM420 transmissions , "painted" from the factory or just sent out "cast iron" , unpainted?
If painted, what color ?

I was too young to notice "back in the day", but I haven't seen a painted one that looked like factory paint in the last 30+ years.

I don't think either the 3 speed or 4 speed trannys were painted. I opted to paint my 3 speed some cast iron color spray paint just to keep the rust away.

Thank you Bill and Kevin. I think that pretty much confirms my suspicions since I could not find a bot of paint on two different SM420 transmissions.
Kevin, I like that color. I have some "Rustoleum Cast Iron Paint" . I may give it a try.
