I go to paint supply house months ago and order straight tint for 66 c10 light blue. I finish it with this epoxy paint, return to paint house with the can of tint I need to replace. I thought I bought tint and then painted more parts. Had a horrible time getting things to cure and act right. Figured it was something I did. I go back today to buy more tint and find out the can I brought with me was for single stage paint not tint?
My epoxy paint specifically says tint. NO WONDER I AM HAVING SUCH PROBLEMS! Now I potentially have over 1200 in product, and possibly a paint job ruined. Countless hours wasted. Do I just eat this or do I have reasonable gripe paint house needs to make right? I don't even know what right is? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 2,242 Herder of Cats, Goats, and Sheep (moderator) | | Herder of Cats, Goats, and Sheep (moderator) Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 2,242 | So you went to buy tint, mixed what you bought into the expoxy, and sprayed it?
So you mixed single stage paint into your epoxy instead of tint? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2021 Posts: 1,258 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2021 Posts: 1,258 | Yes. I specifically asked for tint only. Got single stage and I mixed into epoxy not knowing it was single stage. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2021 Posts: 6,792 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2021 Posts: 6,792 | I think you have a legitimate complaint. What does it say on the receipt? Does it say "Tint"? Or does it say "Single Stage Enamel" or whatever?
If it says "tint" on the receipt or the can, then you definitely have recourse. Whether the store will help you without suing them in small claims court is another story, though.

None of that information I understand not being a painter. I am relying on the expertise of him to get me what I need. I have explained in detail what product I was using and what I needed. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 934 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 934 | Hey there, Mark. This is a headache for sure and explains your problem.
Looking at the issue from a distance I would send a complaint or hand it to them in writing. Factually list the issue, your dependence on their expertise, and the hours and money you have in this effort and summarize with what you reasonably want from them.
Depending on their goodwill to make it right or not…send it to their next level supervisors too. Ask them for that contact information.
Try to get something back from them. But here may be the hard part: this project should be fun yet hard and rewarding work too. Do what you can with corporate, and after you hear back, whether in your favor or not; move on.
Strip it if necessary and repaint. In time and as you move forward with the prject the sting will lessen, and you will have a war story to tell and teach. That may be the reality but I hope they refund you something. It hurts in the pocket book, I know. Once people get their money it’s like permanent stickum and anything less than that becomes your problem and not theirs. - try to move on and take steps forward. In the end it’s their reputation that suffers in spite of the profit. tom

What did the epoxy maker say about the problem? Maybe he can give you some advice if he knows what's been mixed with it.

It seems like the stuff you painted first has hardened up nicely, though, right?

There is definitely some color variations which I attribute to the two sets of chemicals not wanting to mix right. I don't consider it an issue because once assembled the truck will be shot as one to eliminate this and correct any assembly damage. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 2,242 Herder of Cats, Goats, and Sheep (moderator) | | Herder of Cats, Goats, and Sheep (moderator) Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 2,242 | Yes. My concern with this is if the final topcoat will bond properly to the mixed version. | | | | | Joined: May 2015 Posts: 11,065 Housekeeping (Moderator) Making a Stovebolt Bed & Paint and Body Shop Forums | | Housekeeping (Moderator) Making a Stovebolt Bed & Paint and Body Shop Forums Joined: May 2015 Posts: 11,065 | My concern with this is if the final topcoat will bond properly to the mixed version. I don't think that will be an issue as long as everything cured. Will probably need a light scuff before the final coat.

See if the substrate will hold up. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2021 Posts: 1,258 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2021 Posts: 1,258 | I don't want to seal before another coat. Then I am starting over with color and I was hoping the final few coats will give uniformity. I know I will need to scuff for final round but color will remain.
Hoping for positive info from manufacturer tomorrow. Got .y tent done and test heated it today. I can easily bring cab up to 100 degrees which is going to help.set this stuff up so much faster. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2021 Posts: 1,258 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2021 Posts: 1,258 | Spoke with epoxy manufacturer. He said adding paint vs tint is OK, but did cause my curing problems and I needed to have added more to it to get the same color which was another issue when I did my bed pieces.
This made me feel a ton better. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 2,242 Herder of Cats, Goats, and Sheep (moderator) | | Herder of Cats, Goats, and Sheep (moderator) Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 2,242 | | | |
