To make things easy on yourself, pull the manifold assembly.

Remember... there is one on the rear of the block hidden by the bellhousing... bummer.

Working on press fit freeze plugs with the engine in the vehicle is a PITA. I'd suggest using the rubber expansion plugs, after a good cleanup with a wire brush in a drill motor. Pull the manifold assembly and those oil lines to get better access to the side of the engine to remove the old plugs and clean the block.

Has anyone used an auto body slide hammer/dent puller?
To get freeze plugs out of a 235 with manifold still on engine?

They aren't that tough. You can knock them in with a chisel and pull them out with pliers.

If you don't have enough room with a chisel, try a longer punch. Drive it on one side only until it spins around, then use pliers. There is very little room.
