I'd like to mount the spare tire under the bed on my stock 1951 GMC 100. Where can I find the right bracket to do this? All I run across is the J hook for a Chevy. What do I need?

If the '51 GMC is the same as the '51 Chevy, you'll need two u-shaped crosspieces that bolt under the top flange of the frame, and a bar that holds the spare tire, which pivots on a rod hanging from the front crosspiece driver's side and is secured to the rear crosspiece on the passenger side. Here's a picture of the spare tire bar (lower left of the collection.) And a picture of the Factory Assembly Manual page showing the assembly.

You should scan the parts for sale area here. These come up for sale every NOW and again.

They're not that hard to find. The earlier (50 and before) spare carriers are the ones that are like hen's teeth.

Will the 51 and up fit on a '50?

Do the parts bolt on or are they welded in place?

They bolt on. At worst, you'd need to drill some holes for the cross-pieces.

Chris H,

As "Twin Jimmys" mentioned in his reply above, check out the Swap Meet for something that will fill most of the parts you need just in case you might be interested. wink
