On the "to do list" is to re-install the side tire carrier on my 1954 3604 ( 3/4 ton) Truck.

What color should it be painted? Its currently "silver" . Should it be the nsame color as the truck ?

Ron,

I am still looking through my documentation.

Color of the side-mount spare-tire carrier frame for a 1954/55st Chevrolet Truck two-tone cab (with white-exterior cab-top color):

My guesses are:

The two two-tone body options in 1954 were : white top-color; and, the spare-tire frame was either red or yellow lower body-color:

1. If the spare tire carrier was installed at the factory :
- yellow side-tire-carrier for a cab with a two-tone white-top/yellow-bottom cab
- red side-tire-carrier for a cab for with a two-tone while-top/red-bottom cab

2. If the spare tire carrier was installed by the dealer on a two-tone cab :
black side-tire carrier,
or,
lower body-color side-tire carrier

I'm leaning toward's Tim's explanations. Things on my truck, including rear fenders, were painted after being bolted to the bed, as evidenced by runs down the bed side under the fenders. They didn't paint trucks piece-by-piece like I'm doing at the factory.

Bolt-on parts, such as bumper brackets were all black, and the bed side spare tire carrier, were probably painted black before being put in stock, then painted with the truck after installation if at the factory, but not repainted if installed later.

Although with the requirement for a different fender [on edit] but not on a 1-ton, a dealer installing a side mount spare would have to swap that and paint it to match the rest of the truck. They may have also painted the spare carrier.

Bottom line for me - Paint it however you want. Who's going to dispute your choice? ohwell

Thank you Tim and Kevin. It looks like body color is what it'll be for the two side rails and I'll just paint the reat of it satin black and be done with it!
