I was debating between this and the interior forum for this question, so feel free to punt it over there if you thibk it makes more sense there.

I have been going through my 58 making it safe to actually drive. I had not looked really closely at the steering column before other than to note that it wasn't original and plan on eventually putting in a tilt column along with power steering.

That project is low enough priority to not be on the list yet, but I wantes to get a set of turn signals working. Looking at the steering column from the engine side of the firewall, it appears to be original. It has the tube pressed into the steering box, goes through the floor with the standard cover, and mounts to the dash in the normal location.

What has me confused is this turn signal switch. It doesn't work (verfied by probing the wires at the base of the column) but it looks decent so I would like to fix/use it.

Does anyone recognize what it might have come from? It is being held in place by a hose clamp just below it. The steering wheel that is installed is an 80s GMC wheel. The electrical connector on it is not the Chevrolet standard flat connector, so that might be a hint as to what it came from originally?

If I can get parts for this switch (ideally contacts and a cancelling cam) I will just put a standard connector on use it.

Any ideas?

The switch is the same as my 54 and I do believe same as a corvette .mine also has the hose clamp as there is a few videos I found and the screw underneath is for holding most likely striped and there are some parts available to get it working again .I haven’t looked closely at mine yet as I thought the switch did not cancel but if working correct the switch does cancel

I thought that turn signals were not a factory option until 1960, but it looks like they actually started offering them in 57. From what I can tell looking tonight, it appears that GM offered the same switch that the Corvettes used as an option then.

This is probably actually a correct switch/housing, I just have the wrong steering wheel.

It appears that this setup (assuming it is the parts I think it is) did not have a latch/cancel. The internals are a pair of levers and springs to center the stalk and you had to pulse them yourself.

I kind of like that as an "unusual but original" feature. I think I will try and fit it as-is and keep it as a curiousity.

This is the video I seen ,also the wiring and inner contact switch is available about 40 .00. Just remembered what cancelled the signal that was missing on mine ,it goes on the underside of the steering wheel

That looks like the stock set up for your truck. Chevy Classic Truck Parts will have the parts you need to fix it.

I also think it is a stock switch and cancel mechanism.

55.2 and 56 had a handle that was 90 degrees to the steering column that went along with the flat steering wheel. In '57 they changed to a dished steering wheel and angled the part that the handle screwed into to match.

Likely that the wedge that holds the cup in place on the column is missing and someone put the radiator clamp there to keep the cup from sliding down the column.

Definitely a later model steering wheel.

As far I can tell, my '57 is all original drive train, interior, and most sheet metal, that switch looks like mine, a 3 wire switch. I mounted single bulb (1157) tail lights along with the fender mounted front turn signals. I wired two DPDT relays and the 2 wire turn signal flasher can. I'll try to find my hand drawn wire diagram.

I can sort out a wiring diagram on my own. Thanks for thr offer though.

My intention is to swap the parking light housings to dual filament bulbs and put in a set of white/amber bulbs for the front. I have a set of Grote housings with brake/turn/reverse lights in them for the rear.

Thanks for the info all.

That is the same switch that my 56 came with when I got it. It is original and still works well.
Truck Shop and others sell that unit.
It was also used on 54 cars, Corvette's, and available on trucks from 55.2 through 59.
The hose clamp is a not an OEM option.
