Is the seal that fits over the rear bearing called the rear wheel oil seal/rear axle seal? what is the seal that is in the differential that seals the axle as it passes into the differential or is there a seal there? i dropped off wheel bearings and seals to the mechanic and he says i need rear axle seals- does he need another seal? thanks
If you're working on a stock truck (the '53 1/2 ton), there's no inner seal on the differential. Just the seals outboard of the axle bearings. Print the attached pic and take it to your mechanic. If he insists that there's an inner seal, get a different mechanic.

Ok, that's what I figured. He wasn't touching the diff. From what he had said. So do I need to get the 2 gaskets on the way that are on each end of the axle? What are these called if so. Thanks so much...again
You might want to get the gasket at the axle flange if he's separating the drum from the axle (likely). Only 1 per side is needed, the one between the axle flange and deflector won't be needed as it's held on to the axle flange by the pressed in wheel studs. He will need to open the differential cover to get the axles pulled if you're replacing wheel bearings and seals. The spider shaft and block need to be removed and the axles pushed in to remove the "C" clip, then the axles can be pulled. Get a new gasket for the diff cover. If he doesn't know that he needs to open the diff, then maybe you need another mechanic.

Ok ordered a diff gasket this morning. Didn't know about drum gasket. At the end of the week I'm asking for an updated account of what is done and cost. Not afraid to tow back to storage if things are not adding up. I would be doing all myself but want to get the motor in, bearings, brakes, new radiator, starter, clutch kit and our local transmission shop is the best so that would be next if we can keep moving forward. I rented a hot water power washer and scrubbed the bottom clean. Used kroil many times on nuts/bolts and loosened all on brake lines. Pushed some new grease into everything that had a zerk to push out water and old grease.truck is super rust free for Iowa. Prepped well.
Don't quote me, but I think the cover bolts are 1/2" hex head and maybe 5/16" dia coarse thread.
