No, There's a keeper spring inside the bell housing that holds the pivot ball, but otherwise, if not attached to the linkage, the fork just flops around.

Perhaps you are referring to that fork pivot ball retainer spring Kevin mentioned???

1st pic below is from one of the Chevy Master Parts Catalogs.

2nd pic if from the 1950 GMC parts catalog.

Both catalogs list that spring as GM# 838987, so same for GMC or Chevy.
