Okay, so now that I've re-installed the rebuilt '58 235 in the chassis and run it awhile, I've come to realize I have few problems:

1. The front motor mount cover is too wide and it's rubbing on the harmonic ballencer pulley (it was throwing off sparks until the pully wore a groove in it...). Is there a narrower one that fits the motor mount better?

2. The short shaft water pump sits too low -- a third of the fan arc is below the radiator. Because of this mis-match, the lower radiator hose doesn't fit quite right and leaks. Is the plate that Jim Carter sells to move it up easy to install? I see that you have to drill a hole in the block to use it -- yikes. Can I reuse this brand new water pump with it or is it something to add to my expensive lessons learned pile?

Mike (ol trucks) or anyone -- got any wisdom for me?

Use Pre68Dave's water pump adapter and a 216 waterpump. That way you can get a waterpump from your FLAPS without waiting for shipping or having to shorten one and your fan will be up where it was originally. I think you can also use the 216 balancer, but am not sure. I believe it is two holes that must be drilled and tapped; look for the adapter on Ebay and the instructions for its use are on the product write-up.

I have a 55 235 in my 52, with the short water pump, it too is low, but always cooled fine. If I was going to do it again would try one of the adapters to use the 216 pump at the correct height.

Do you have a picture of the mount problem? I can then go compare it to mine.

On my 216 front motor mount, the cover plate is deeper in one direction than the other. I installed mine with the longer lip towards the pan and I thought it was a mistake. Maybe I did it right and didn't know it.

The short pumps will work but the adapter plate works much better. You should use the balancer from the old 216 as the later model balancer is to big around. Drilling and taping the holes for the plate is easy just make sure to get it straight. I'm using one of these plates and 216 pump on my old doodle bug wench truck that get worked pretty hard and have never had a over heat problem.

Hey John, I'm sure glad you posted this question. Soon as I can get a chance to get back to working on my 51, I'll be putting a 57 235 in it. Sure glad you guys are around to do all this pre-engineering for me :hammering: grin .

ditto on that smile .I was looking to give my 216 away but maybe I should wait until I have everything new in my truck.

Here is a pic of my 216 still in my 4400.If you zoom in on the front motor mount you can see it kinda overhangs the crossmember towards the oil pan.The motor was not original so I'm not sure if it is supposed to be like that.
