Hey guys,
I rebuilt my 3-speed last year and it is grinding 2nd to 3rd. 1st to 2nd is good and 3rd to 2nd is good. Would this be a clutch adjustment issue or synchro? There's about 1-1 ½" play in clutch pedal to *any* movement of the fork. The J-hook is almost to the end of adjustment with maybe ¼" left. The truck is a '44 with a '56 235. Not really sure where to start with this problem. TIA

There shouldn't be that much free travel at the top of the clutch pedal movement. 3/4" to 1" is plenty to keep the bearing from spinning constantly and wearing itself out. Drop the dust cover off the bottom of the flywheel and watch the clutch disc when a helper depresses the pedal with the engine running. The disc should stop, not continue to spin, even with the trans in neutral. What kind of lube are you using? Some of the super slippery synthetic lubes will keep the synchronizers from working properly, but that would probably cause problems in all the synchronized gears, not just a 2-3 shift.

Try pausing for an instant in neutral before going on to 3rd. That eliminated the need for double-clutching on my '48. Not a fix, of course, but maybe it will provide clues.
