Sharing an experience:
Last fall I had a wire catch fire under the dash after turning on the ignition switch (burned the old fabric housing off was the only damage). The culprit was the wiper control arm that had fallen off and landed / wedged in the perfect spot to cause a short; it was laying on top of an original wire (the one burning) and the rod was connecting the positive post of the ignition switch and was grounding to the metal dash. In the photo you can see etching on the rod. I have since wrapped the rod in electrical tape in case it falls off again.

Another reason why I don't use that linkage. I use a piece of TIG welding wire and make my own wrap around ends so that it will never come off without a pair of pliers. Counting on a piece of rubber for the end of a linkage to stab through to keep it of for any length of time was just a dumb idea.

maybe wiggle some heat shrink around it.. the tape might fall off after another 40-50 years or so.

I put some heat shrink over the ends of mine, easiest to do that with the gauge cluster out but it worked like a charm. Mine kept falling off as well before that, hasn't happened since
