Is it possible you misread the number on your pumpkin??? A check of the 1949 Chevrolet Truck data indicates that the standard rear axle ratio for your 3600 would have been 4.57 - 1, with an optional (RPO 208) ratio of 5.14 - 1 available. You can identify the gear ratio by using this Calculation Tech Tip, or just remove the rear cover and check the stamped ratio info on the side of the ring gear. Hope this info is helpful? Dan

A lot of them got installed (and worn out) in dirt track race cars in the late 1970's. They were just right to run against a Muncie 4 speed in 2nd. gear on 1/4 mile tracks. They made the engines run 3K RPM in the turns, and 7K at the end of the straights! We scavenged up every one we could find in all the salvage yards back then.
