Remove the plug, The proper level is at or just below the level of the plug. Don't use GL-5 lube. It is not safe for brass, which is used in the transmission's synchros.

Someone more qualified can speak to this, but I am beginning to suspect that some level below the plug is preferable. My Sm420 likes to find its own level out of the input shaft area. I don’t totally understand, but the early SM420s had some sort of non-sealing seal at the front….by design.

I have a leak somewhere towards the transmission so I need to check that first. If it is just "sweating" I'm prob still low. Good on the Tractor tip. Would not have known that.

If the case is too full and the vehicle is parked in a steep nose down position, lube will leak into the bell housing and contaminate the clutch lining. If you can reach the lube level with a fingertip through the fill hole, there's enough there to keep the gears and bearings happy. Jerry
