1953 chev 3800, 216, Rochester B2 single barrel, hand choke

Hi guys,

I am rebuilding my carb, and am stumped.

How do:
1.) alum. check ball and
2.) pump return spring

Both go in the power valve pump well. Is the ball check confined inside the spring? Doesn't make sense.
Ball check can't seat, and doesn't fit outside of the spring. How the heck is this darned thing assembled?

I'm scratching my head on this one,
Jim D.

somerust,

Check out this web page that has the Rochester B Service Manual (1951). Be sure to look at the first manual (Page 7 has the exploded diagram with part labeling) as that is for the "manual choke" version of the "B" that I think most closely would match what your '53 216 may have.

Although it is for 1951, I think it will give you the info you seek on what goes where in putting your Rochester B back together.

If I missed something, am sure one of our "carb" specialists will chime in to offer more details.

Let us know how the rebuild works out! thumbs_up

Hi Gord,
Thanks for the information, Mikes Carburetor is really good.
My carb does have two holes in the power valve pump well.
He does address the aluminum ball check, says it is for the intake port;
which is the smaller of the two holes in the power valve pump well.
Unfortunately, there is no room for the ball check to be inserted
where it is supposed to go, there is no keeper, and the pump ret. spring is in the way.

I'll keep researching, and thanks for the comeback.

Hey Dan,
Appreciate the reply.
I think I'll do exactly what the instructions say, which is:

4. Drop small aluminum ball in pump well.

5. Place pump return spring into well and center it by depressing it with finger.

6. Install pump plunger and connect pump link to throttle lever and pump rod. Attach Pin Springs.

I'll complete the rebuild, install carb, and turn her over.

So, coming up, I'll let you know what happens.

Note:

Two things forced me to the decision "do exactly what the instructions say:"

1.) Youtube video:
a.) Video title is - Ep. 12 - Rebuilding the Rochester Model B from
b.) Author - R's Workbench, aka RSWORKBENCH@GMAIL.COM
c.) See times at - 17:17-17:51 and 18:35- 18:49

2.) And stovebolt members encouragement:
a.) primary help from responding bolters, which is much
appreciated and a lucky found resource
b.) a reply from Authorized Pest Peggy M., passing to me carb information
about "carbking." I combed through his posts; they were an
info. cache for sure, qualified help in black and white

Again thank you,

Jim D.
