I couldn't find this info on the sticky thread and it doesn't look like you can post to it anymore...
Can anyone tell me if the big 5 lug independent suspension (IFS) spindles/hubs are the same as the I-beam axle type? If so that would be great as there would be more vehicles to choose from...but if I had to guess the answer is no, the type to find is from the I-beam.
I think there were both? I have a P30 with 16"wheels and it is an 8 lug. I had a P30 with 19.5" wheels and it was 5 and 10 if IIRC. I think someone posted once that they tried everything to replace 5 lug fronts on an I beam with something modern and never found a solution. So my guess is probably no... Mike
George, thats incorrect. I bought a P30 with the I beam type, with the big 5 lug axle...so P30's do come in both 5/10 lug or 8 lug.
Trying to understand the differences on the spindle/hub between IFS and I-beam... If I had to guess the disc brake P30 swap only works if you find the I-beam type since it uses kingpins. That makes sense anyway...
I had a 1999 Chevy 3500hd rollback with a 15000 gvwr and it was 5 lugs in front on an ibeam with disk brakes. The rear was 10 lug with disk brakes also. Used the same wheel front and rear.
the c3500hd front axle is very similar to the P30 front axle that are the I-beam type. But with the c3500hd axle the steering components are in front of the axle, while the P30 has the steering components behind the axle - which is how our old big bolt trucks have their steering. This is why Griggs recommends finding the I-beam P30 axles for disc brake swaps.
My ‘55 GMC fitted P-3500 HD front disc brake hubs/spindles with tie rod behind axle easily without tires sticking out past the fenders, with new ($12.09) new king pin bushings.
