I’ve decided to buy a NOS AC 4149 and a rebuild kit from Then and Now and am looking for help removing the valves. I have experimented on the old Airtex one I took off with no luck. They look to be a press fit and I have not been able to budge them. Any insights from someone who has done this?

You'll need to fabricate a fixture to push the check valves into the housing without putting any pressure anywhere except the outer edge. That shouldn't be much of a challenge for anyone with basic machining skills and the right tooling. An arbor press or just a heavy duty C clamp should be needed. Jerry

Maybe try to find a small socket from a quarter inch set thats just right size to chase those check valves in, with a c-clamp, as Jerry suggests. Not too hard.

Once you get the old ones knocked out, a socket the right size and a bench vise would probably work to push them back into the housing. Make sure they face the right direction so the flow is toward the carburetor- - - -they're both the same part, just a one way spring loaded valve. The tension of the spring provided in the rebuild kit controls the output pressure of the pump. Jerry

What is included in the rebuild kit, and what does it cost? I'm tempted to buy one, and fabricate the tooling needed to install the check valves as a demonstration project. I have a sneaky suspicion an ammunition reloading press could be adapted to install those check valves, once the fixtures are fabricated.

Cadillac fuel pumps that I've rebuilt in the past had similar valves. They just pressed in by hand and then were staked around the edge to keep from popping out per the shop manual.

Make sure to take note of inlet and outlet orientation. Do one at a time.
