The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Choke Cable wire Replacement

So, after fiddling with the carb a bit the choke cable wire broke at the very end of the shielding. Has anyone ever just replaced the wire and not the entire assembly? I was thinking of just using some piano wire and and running a new cable through the sleeve but need to measure it out and see what size it is.

My hand throttle cable did that very thing so I bought a reproduction cable. My plan was to replace the entire thing, sheath and all but getting the old one removed under the dash got the best of me.

Ended up sliding the new cable into the old sheath from the dash side. It works. The new cable is a slightly larger diameter so it doesn’t move as freely as I’d like.

You can buy replacement choke cable assembly’s thru most vendors fairly reasonable. Here is one from Classic Parts.[LINK]

There may be enough slack in your existing cable that you could trim back some of the shielding to expose the unbroken inner cable. Reposition the shielding/cable in the securing clamp on the carb after exposing the cable and reattach everything and you should have a functional choke control again.

If there isn't enough slack to do this, lots of vendors selling replacement choke cable assemblies.

I like the look of my original handle and the sheath (going for the original dirty farm truck look) which has led me to look down the path of just replacing the wire and reattaching it to the original choke handle. For now I am just using my throttle cable till I can repair the choke.

I had the same concern. But the new knob doesn’t look out of place on my “dirty old farm truck dash”, as it turns out.

I’m sure with some creativity, you could affix old knob to new wire. Not sure exactly how off the top of my head.

Couple dirty farm thumb prints on the new knob will break it in. I agree with Gdads51, about there might be an extra amount of the sheathing which you could shorten ending up with too much cable wire, which would allow you to snip some of the cable wire away, hoping the damaged area would be part of snipped part.
