Backstory - had local automotive glass company install windshield along with molded rubber gasket from Steele Rubber. Guy from the glass company says the opening is too small and removes material from the windshield....twice, two trips, on the third trip he got it installed. No sealer, slapped and installed using rope method.

The windshield leaks badly , huge puddle all the way across the front of the floor mat.

my conclusion - the molded rubber gasket no longer seals against he windshield, that and no sealer enables the water to enter the cab

I guess the only option is to start over. I'm questioning the glass guys skills regarding old trucks. Do I go buy another gasket that requires bonding the ends so I can get a good seal against the windshield and also apply sealant per the shop manual?

Not sure I'm up to it, but I suppose I could give it a whirl. I live in Northeast Missouri, so there's not an abundance of installers....

Thoughts , ideas, input?

Both the 47-51 Service Manual and 55 2nd Manual I have call for sealant around the pinch weld AND around the glass after roping in place. If your guy didn't use sealant, then he didn't finish the job. You may be able to reuse the seal, but not sure about that.

Kevin , I stumbled upon another "Glass Company", talked the owner through the entire scenario and he said what you said almost to the letter. He's going to come to the house Friday (tentative) and take a look at it and determine next steps. Thanks for the response, Kevin, I appreciate your input. BTW, I plan to to take pics and document his work if he will allow me to do so.

I installed the new windshield in my 54 3100 using the rope method with sealant and my windshield leaks. Based on the design of the rubber gasket and the sealant I used I have no idea how it can possibly leak. No one to blame but me. I did it.

Dave , I'm a big chicken when it comes to the windshield. I watched one too many YouTube Videos, read several posts, and kinda decided that whomever assisted me would end up running away to never return and I'd get intoxicated and start smoking to boot. So I ate Ramen noodles and Spam for two months, saved the money and paid someone else to do it. Looks like I get to relive the whole thing again. Seriously, the "new guy" talked like he knew his stuff. We shall see.

I'll mention some of the rubber gaskets fit so well and so tightly it is extremely difficult to get sealer between them and the pinchweld. Especially if you have the inserted stainless steel trim piece. If using 3M 08509, remember mineral spirits for clean-up and mask, mask, mask. You probably need a minimum of two or three layers of good masking tape on the body. Really easy to make a mess of a paint job. It will take some effort to get your nozzle tip in here. PLEASE do not try to apply this sealer before you install your windshield. That just won't work on these type windshields. That works if you're laying a windshield in on top of the sealer. Not this type. Anyhow, mask well and then get a very thin piece of nylon or other flexible plastic to pry that rubber up to get your nozzle in there and work slowly and carefully. You can also mask the rubber piece. Then when you seal the rubber to the glass, a lot of folks use the urethane product, but the 08509 will work just as well. Look at the top outside corner for a starting point. Usually there will be a pucker there. Mask the glass, also. Makes clean-up easier. A couple of images to show just how tightly the gasket fits on mine...please pardon the dust. Good luck!

If you have a ball hook tool, you can use that to lift the rubber up on the body side, but please remember to mask. I've seen too many chipped paint jobs from bungled efforts. If you don't have a ball hook tool you can make one from an old screwdriver but polish it as well as you can.

Thanks Jon! Appreciate the advice and yes, your windshield looks like a very tight and good fit.
