The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Tool Chest I keep getting "offers I can't refuse"!

One of the guys who hunts deer and turkey on our place called me up with a race horse deal on some shop equipment. One of his friends who says he's "too old" to work in his shop had a set of oxygen and acetylene tanks (full) for sale, a torch with cutting and welding tips and regulators, and a Century MIG welder with the gas system , and a couple of home-brewed carts for the equipment, all for $300.00! Yes, I bit! That only makes me the proud owner of three sets of torches, three MIG machines, A couple of AC stick welders, and various other bits and pieces of shop equipment. Now, if I can only stay healthy enough to use the stuff- - - - -been down with some kind of flu or a bad cold for almost a week!

Uh, "too old to work in the shop"...when's that? Congrats on the equipment purchases. Sounds to me like you could pick out the best and put the rest in the swap meet? Regarding that cold/flu stuff....take care of yourself, we need you.

Too old to work in the shop is when the funeral home brings the gurney out to transport you away. Sounds like you made one heck of a deal, especially if the tanks are slick-necks (not owned by the welding supply house). Take your vitamins and get over that crud!

TexasJim50 Our local pirate gas outfit makes their own slick neck bottles,chuck em up turn em smooth then rough stamp their name on it. I was at their facility it was packed with bottles,Kenny said this isn't 1% of our bottles !! Bought a lease from them for 55$ nearly 60 yrs. ago hasn't cost even a dollar since. Used to be very reasonable but Kenny and his brother passed and the daughter got kinda greedy but has since kinda moderated. Lost my contract (paper) but got a letter from them (they thought maybe I'd croaked I think) which proved my contract...so keep on keepin on. Both gasses plus nitrogen in a not even contracted bottle I traded for oh 20 years ago. Torches,mig,stick all family tools some about 80 yrs. old.

We have a 1971 Century mig (240 amp) that is still our go to machine for heavy duty or extended time welding. Have a 110v Miller, 140amp Lincoln, and a 145 amp Hobart for thin metal but they are not 100% duty cycle like the old Century. Been a good machine.

Evan, if they keep dropping the price on that Storm-Vulcan camshaft grinder up un Cleveland Ohio, I just might be tempted to pull the trigger on that thing! It looks brand new, and it could be looking that way in my shop!

I have a good friend that has a Storm-Vulcan grinder and stacks of profile blanks. Probably 50 for flat head Fords. Non stock of course but probably would part with some or duplicate popular ones. His Dad invented the grinder all use today with the interchangeable profile blanks. Before each machine was dedicated to grinding one profile only.

Interesting! The problem would be with finding a flathead to rebuild. Round track racers like my father blew up metric tons of them back in the late 1940's and early 50's! Most of them ran pirated copies of the Iskenderian "404" cam.

A month ago, the asking price was close to $8K.

I have 2 flatheads here. One early, one late. Both stuck cranks. A new Scat crank in a box with piles of flathead pistons, rings, lifters, bearings, blah, blah blah. I wonder what an Uber would charge me to drive them over to you, Jerry???

Good question! Dad used to use a 4" stroke 49-53 Mercury crankshaft, stroked out to 4 1/8", and bore the blocks 1/4" oversize to 3 7/16". To do that successfully, the two center cylinders had to be moved apart a little to keep from getting too close to the exhaust passage between them. Then he would grind the small end of the connecting rods a little to let the pistons center up in the offset cylinders. The next door neighbor to the guy who sold me the 216 engine in Townsend Tennessee has a complete 48 Furd 2 door sedan that belonged to his grandfather- - - - -hasn't been run in many years!
