I'm looking to buy a new short shaft water pump for my 1962 235 engine, that I put into my 53 pickup. The more I look the more confused I get. My old pump cleared the radiator just fine, and used an original 15 inch fan. Most dealers have no stock on the pumps. Chevys of the 40s appears to have them in stock, their number 3741033LP. But their description says that you must use a different fan. They call it a mechanical fan. But they don't actually sell the fan. I just want to keep this simple, and as stock as possible. My old pump has a chunk broken out of the inlet nipple, but I think there's enough left to clamp the hose to. The pulley is also bent, and it's spot welded on. The Chevys of the 40s pump comes with a 7 inch pulley which is larger than the one on my old pulley. Can any of you guys simplify this a little for me. Mother Truckers apparently sell the pumps too, but I can't find a site for them.

It just takes a few minutes to make your own "short shaft" pump. Remove the back plate, set the pump up in a hydraulic press, and push the fan/pulley flange back whatever distance will make the pulley line up with your old pump spacing. Then use an angle grinder and a cutoff wheel to trim the end of the shaft to length. If you're not comfortable with doing that, send me a new long shaft pump and your old one to use as a pattern, and I'll be glad to modify the new pump. PM if you like, for more details.

Cool, I did not know that. I have everything that I need to do that, so I don't mind giving it a try. I can't believe that I'm still learning at this old age, but I love it. Thank you very much for that info.

I've also used a water pump pulley for a Ford small block V8 (289, 302, etc.) on a Chevy pump by drilling the center hole to fit and drilling or slotting the fan bolt holes for the Chevy pump bolt pattern. There's even a 2 sheave version of that pulley that can be used for driving an A/C compressor or a power steering pump.

I purchased a pulley for a short water pump SBC 283 327 350 ect. Then I pushed the collar back about 1" and made sure it lined up with my damper pulley. It was the same diameter as my original water pump pulley, just shorter. It fit the bolt pattern of the fan exactly. Then I cut my shaft off to match the length of the original. eBay item number:#292155153560

I must interject here and give you , in my opinion a better option. A shortened 235 water pump does fit but not without it’s own possible problems. Doing so does not center the fan on the radiator for maximum cooling and might cause overheating on a hot day.

A better way to fix this interference issue is to purchase a water pump and fan for the original engine 216/235 from 1953, then use an adaptor plate to realign the pump to the radiator. This adaptor plate, designed and manufactured by one of our own bolters “Pre 68 Dave”, can be purchased from him directly by PM’ing him thru this forum.
I have a ‘52 3100 with a ‘59 235 and went this route. Fairly easy to install and you can hardly tell it’s not stock.

He has a website showing this adaptor plate. Here is a link. http://chev235guy.blogspot.com/search/label/Water%20Pump%20Relocation%20Adapter

I was looking at 216 pumps the other day to make this switch at some point. My, my…,they have gone up in price the last few years.

Hey LumberSawyer, When you bought the pulley for the SBC pump, are you saying that you used it on a 235 water pump?

Yes the pulley fit the 235 water pump exactly. The item number I posted is the same one I bought.

The O"Rielly water pump number is MWP 58-126 ....a new counter man may stutter around with it as they did when I bought a second one later.....but they finally figured it out since had the previous receipt with me!!!

What he said. I've done both the short shaft and adapter plate methods and can confirm much better cooling using the 216 pump with the adapter plate. A post 1954 engine in a pre 1954 truck looks like this using a short shaft pump:

Curt, I see the fan is low on the radiator .
My new 54, it also looks like this, with the, I believe, 59 engine dropped in.
I have no idea if the shaft was shortened, or what.
Will this be subject to inadequate cooling?
Charley

If your radiator is in the original position you have a short shaft (modified) pump. You may have no cooling issues as is but if the temperature creeps up while sitting in traffic a 216 pump with the relocation plate should cure it.

That's an Amsoil bypass mount with a built in restrictor. The Amsoil filters are super efficient but also super expensive. That's a Fram (diesel?) filter that fit on the Amsoil mount.

Water pump rebuild kits are available.

I’d be curious to hear from someone who has taken that approach. I know rebuilding a vintage FUEL pump seems to be preferred nowadays to purchasing a new Chinese one.

I’m not aware of a rash of offshore water pump failures, but I probably haven’t paid much attention to that issue.

A quick search of the web shows at least 1 eBay seller 2ndgenautoparts (not mine) offering rebuild kits and related replacement parts for most if not all 216, 235 and 261 water pumps.

Also a whole lot more water pump kits for other Chevy and GMC engines that fall into our truck categories.

No indication where these parts are manufactured, but pictures don't display anything looking like junky or poor quality.

Would be interested in hearing about anyone's experience in doing their own rebuild with these parts.

Dan
