And also hav8ng a difficult time getting shoes up where they belong.

The service manual covers the brakes pretty well. If 1/2 ton, they're the same up thru about 1970. The parking brake cable should have a barrel shaped piece on the end that clips into the actuator arm for the parking brakes. If you get it clipped in correctly, it shouldn't come loose.
